NIAB Innovation Farm workshop on dye processes and practice for fashion design and supply chain SMEs; delivered in collaboration with the Centre for Sustainable Fashion

September 10th, 2013 9:30 AM

NIAB Innovation Farm’s FREE workshop on dye processes and practice for fashion design and supply chain SMEs; delivered in collaboration with Centre for Sustainable Fashion

The environmental impacts of the clothing sector are increasingly well documented and many businesses are now looking for ways to do things differently and to send a positive message to their customer. Synthetic dyes and industrial dye processes account for some of the biggest challenges in cleaning up the fashion supply chain. This workshop will offer a practical introduction to natural alternatives and artisan dyeing techniques that are accessible and achievable for a small business.

The workshop will explore some of the following areas:

· An outline of the standard industrial dyeing process for different garment segments

· The different types of dyes and dyeing techniques

· The major environmental impacts of industrial dyeing and the impacts of different types of colouration and opportunities to address these impacts

· Guidance on alternatives to synthetic dyes

· Exploration of the pros and cons of natural dyeing

· Small batch/artisan dyeing techniques

· Native and non native dye plants and the colours they can achieve

The workshop will also offer attendees an introduction to a range of plants from which dyes can be derived as well as a hands on practical demonstration of the dyes and their uses.

Follow-up one-to-one appointments for eligible SME's will focus on the needs of individual businesses and may include consultation on the following areas: New product development, supply chain management, development of collaborations, market analysis and new retail opportunities.

The programme of the day will be as follows:
