Health and nutrition
Challenge
Concerns over food safety and healthy eating have attracted increased attention in recent years, bringing major changes in the demands of food and drink processors and their customers.
Solutions
Access to the most advanced developments in agricultural science and technology will be essential to meet the challenge of maintaining and improving the nutritional and health properties of our crops.
Exhibits in NIAB Innovation Farm include crops with:
- Improved digestibility for human or livestock consumption, e.g sainfoin and high sugar grasses
- Healthy culinary characteristics including improved levels of antioxidants or long-chain fatty acids in oil, e.g. oilseed rape, corn gromwell and enhanced antioxidents levels in tomatoes
- Improved quality, e.g. novel fatty acids and profiles in oilseed rape
- Pharmaceutical end-use properties, e.g. production of galanthamine to combat the effects of Alzheimer’s and artemisinin to treat malaria and products from Sea Buckthorn berries.
