Break crops 2012

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum)

Partner: Scottish Agriculture College

Buckwheat is currently used as a gluten-free alternative to cereals; milled to produce flatbread especially favoured in Asian countries or served as an alternative to rice. Research has shown that buckwheat could be an ideal break crop as it has good phosphate sequestration properties. The crop improves soil fertility as it accumulates phosphorus, andpotassium, and makes these and other nutrients available to the following crop. It also reduces the pH in the root zone, which helps to mobilise insoluble nutrients.

Millet (Panicum miliaceum)

Mammoth is a white millet variety which has been commercially produced in the UK since 2003. It is an earlymaturing variety with good standing ability and benefits from a high value niche end-market.
