Lupins 2012

Genetic innovation

Supplier: Soya UK

Lupins (Lupinus ssp) are a high protein crop which can be grown in all parts of the UK, and can produce a large quantity of high-quality protein per hectare. They are frequently grown by livestock farmers either to be cut as forage to produce a high-protein forage or combined as a grain crop to be used as a substitute for bought-in soya meal. There are three kinds of agricultural lupin – white, blue and yellow – and each have their uses according to which part of the UK they are grown and the planned harvesting technique.
