Genetic innovation
Hybrids are often associated with extra ‘vigour’ and increased yield, but they can also be better suited to lower inputs or marginal land or cope with environmental stresses such as drought or high temperatures. Intraspecific hybrids – the crossing of two parent lines producing an F1 hybrid – can give step changes in performance or end-use quality such as unique processing properties or nutritional profiles compared to the parental lines.
